Imagine standing above a sea of clouds, watching the sun rise and set the world on fire. Below you, the mountainside isn't rock or forest, but a cascading series of liquid mirrors, each one reflecting the sky's every color. This is the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces, a 1,300-year-old agricultural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
But this marvel is in danger. A combination of climate change and rapid tourism development is causing this "Mirror in the Sky" to shrink. The terraces are drying up, and the perfect reflections are becoming harder to find.
If you want to see one of the world's most spectacular landscapes, the time to go is now. Here is your essential guide to the Yuanyang Rice Terraces.
Location: Yuanyang County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China
Ticket Price: CNY 100 for a multi-day pass. This pass includes the main viewing platforms: Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui (CNY 70 value) and the Azheke Village (CNY 30 value). Other viewpoints are free.

Why Go? A 1,300-Year-Old Work of Art
Located in Yunnan Province, these terraces were hand-carved from the mountains by the Hani people over 1,300 years ago. It’s a living testament to a civilization's harmony with nature. Beyond the views, you'll discover the unique Hani culture, from their forest-worshipping beliefs to their iconic "Mushroom Houses"—thatched-roof homes that dot the landscape.
A World-Class Wonder: Widely considered the most beautiful rice terraces in China and undeniably among the most spectacular on Earth.
Living Hani Culture: This is not a relic. It's the home of the Hani people. You can immerse yourself in their unique customs and see their charming, traditional "mushroom houses."
The Vanishing "Sky Mirror": The iconic, mirror-like reflections on the water-filled terraces are an ephemeral wonder. Due to climate changes and development, this perfect "Mirror of the Sky" is becoming rarer. See it now, as it may one day be gone.
The Secret: When to Visit
This is the most important tip: You must visit between November and late March.
After the autumn harvest, the terraces are flooded with water to prepare for the next planting season. This is when the magic happens. The water-filled paddies transform into a mosaic of mirrors, reflecting the sky.
Come any other time, and you'll just see green or brown fields. For the best chance of seeing the famous sea of clouds, plan your trip around February and March.

Things to See/Do

The sights are spread out, but there are several must-sees you should focus on:
Duoyishu (多依树): The Sunrise King This is the core area and the undisputed best place to watch the sunrise. The terraces here are vast, and as the sun climbs, it illuminates the fog-filled valleys and the water's surface, creating a golden, multi-layered spectacle.
Best Visit Time:6:00 am

Duoyishu Laohuzui (老虎嘴) & Bada (坝达): The Sunset Showstoppers
Bada: Known for its immense scale and beautiful, flowing lines. The setting sun casts dramatic shadows and lights up thousands of terrace levels.
Laohuzui (Tiger's Mouth): Arguably the most dramatic. The terraces are steep and wild, looking like a thousand snakes slithering down the mountain. The sunset here is considered by many photographers to be one of the most magnificent pastoral views in the world.
Best Visit Time:6:30 pm

Bada
Tiger‘s Mouth
Aichun (爱春): The Blue Mirror This spot is famous for reflecting a deep, sapphire blue—but only under two conditions: it must be a clear, sunny day, and you must go before 10:00 AM. After that, the angle of the sun changes, and the magic is gone.
Best Visit Time:8:00 am - 10:00 am

Aichu Blue Terraces Azheke (阿者科): The Living Village For a dose of culture, visit this 160-year-old Hani village. It's one of the best-preserved examples of traditional life. Walk among the "Mushroom Houses," see locals in traditional attire, and get a feel for the ancient lifestyle that created this landscape.
