Beijing Practical Guide: Transport, City Layout, and Accommodation

1. Airports and Train Stations

Beijing has two international airports and four primary railway stations.

Airports:

  • Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK): 25-30 km northeast of the city center. Reached in 30-40 minutes via the Airport Express.

  • Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX): 45-50 km south of the city center. Reached in 20 minutes via the Daxing Airport Express.

Railway Stations:

  • Beijing Railway Station: Located in the city center (inside the 2nd Ring Road).

  • Beijing South Railway Station: 7 km from the center. Main hub for high-speed trains to Shanghai and eastern China.

  • Beijing West Railway Station: 8 km from the center. Main hub for high-speed trains to Xi'an and western/southern China.

  • Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station: 8-10 km east of the center. Serves northeast routes like Harbin.

2. City Layout: The Ring Roads

Beijing is built on a concentric grid system expanding from the center.

  • 1st Ring: The immediate perimeter of the Forbidden City.

  • 2nd Ring (Old City): Outlines the ancient city walls. Contains Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and Nanluoguxiang.

  • 3rd & 4th Rings (Modern Core): Contains the Guomao CBD, Sanlitun, Summer Palace, and Olympic Park.

  • 5th & 6th Rings (Suburbs): Contains the 798 Art District and routes to the Great Wall.

3. Where to Stay: The 5 Best Subway Lines

Choose your hotel based on proximity to one of these five subway lines.

Subway Line 1 | The Classic Sightseeing Route

  • Target: First-time visitors on 1-3 day trips.

  • Covers: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Wangfujing, Guomao.

  • Where to Stay: Wangfujing, Jianguomen, Dawanglu.

  • Pros: Direct access to main landmarks.

  • Cons: High foot traffic, noisy.

Subway Line 2 | The Old City Loop

  • Target: Travelers who want a central base without changing hotels.

  • Covers: Qianmen, Chongwenmen, Dongzhimen, Xizhimen.

  • Where to Stay: Qianmen, Chongwenmen, Xizhimen.

  • Pros: It is a circle line. You can easily transfer back to Line 2 from anywhere in the city.

Subway Line 4 | The Gardens Route

  • Target: Travelers focusing on historical parks and a slower pace.

  • Covers: Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace), National Library.

  • Where to Stay: Xizhimen, Ping'anli.

  • Pros: Concentrated access to major outdoor landmarks.

Subway Line 6 | The Golden Line

  • Target: First-timers and couples prioritizing hotel quality and aesthetics.

  • Covers: Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai, Beihai Park, Prince Gong's Mansion.

  • Where to Stay: Beihai North, Nanluoguxiang, Chegongzhuang, Hujialou.

  • Summary: Line 1 is best for daytime sightseeing; Line 6 is best for evening atmosphere and boutique hotels.

Subway Line 10 | The Transfer & Business Route

  • Target: Travelers looking for high-end stays and modern commercial areas.

  • Covers: Guomao, Sanlitun, Yansha.

  • Where to Stay: Guomao, Hujialou, Tuanjiehu.
