Shanghai is famous for its tall skyscrapers, but its true charm is found when you slow down and walk through its local neighborhoods. If you want your family to experience the real Shanghai, skip the crowded tourist spots and follow this simple 1-day plan.
1. Breakfast: Xiao Yan Sheng Jian on Dingxi Road
Start your morning like a local on Dingxi Road (定西路). Head to Xiao Yan Sheng Jian (晓燕生煎) for Shanghai’s famous pan-fried pork buns (Shengjianbao). They are cooked in big pans until the bottoms are super crispy.
Tip for kids: Bite a tiny hole first, sip the delicious soup inside carefully, and then eat the bun!

2. Morning: Stroll Along Yuyuan Road
Next, walk down Yuyuan Road (愚园路). This beautiful street is lined with green trees, old historic houses, nice coffee shops, and fun little stores. There are no big tourist crowds here. People walk at an easy pace. It’s a great place to grab a coffee, look at the shops, and just enjoy how comfortable and quiet the city can be.

3. Sweet Treat: Bebaked
While walking, stop by a dessert shop named bebaked. They make beautiful French-style sweets but add unique Asian flavors. It is the perfect high-quality snack to keep the kids happy and energized.

4. Afternoon: Relax at Fuxing Park
Next, visit Fuxing Park (复兴公园). It looks like an old French garden, but the life inside is 100% Shanghainese. You will see local grandparents ballroom dancing, people practicing calligraphy with water on the ground, and families resting on the grass. It is a peaceful place to sit, relax, and watch local life go by.

5. Dinner: Authentic Shanghai Food (Benbang菜)
For dinner, try real Shanghai local food. Unlike Sichuan food, Shanghai food is completely non-spicy. It is savory and sweet, which is perfect for children.
What to order:
Scallion Oil Noodles (葱油拌面): Simple, tasty noodles that kids love.
Shanghai Smoked Fish (熏鱼): Crispy on the outside, sweet, and very tender inside.
Clover Sprouts (酒香草头): Fresh green vegetables cooked with a splash of rice wine.
Yellow Croaker Soup (黄鱼豆腐): A warm, rich fish and tofu soup.
For Adults: Try a tiny sip of Baijiu (白酒), China’s traditional strong spirit, to celebrate your day!

6. Night: A Walk on Suzhou River
End your day with a walk along Suzhou River (苏州河). On one side of the river, you will see the beautiful old European buildings lit up; on the other side, you will see the futuristic skyscrapers. It is the perfect, relaxing view to finish your family day in Shanghai.
