Architectural design concept of Chongqing 1949 Grand Theatre

The architectural design of the Chongqing 1949 Grand Theatre's roof is inspired by the shape of a clock. Viewed from above, the theatre resembles a giant clock face, engraved with four significant years: 1921, 1949, 1978, and 2021, marking the century-long history of the Communist Party of China from the 10th year of the Republic of China (1921) to 2021. The overall design conveys the concept of a "time engine, historical stage." The theatre features large steps and ramps, blending the building into the landscape, reflecting the mountainous terrain of Chongqing and continuing the visual theme of the slopes and steps of Ciqikou.

The Play: Chongqing · 1949

"Chongqing · 1949" has a runtime of approximately 80 minutes and is set against the backdrop of the liberation of Chongqing in 1949. The narrative tells the story of many Communist Party members who were imprisoned in Zhazidong and Baigongguan, enduring various forms of torture and remaining unyielding and resolute in the face of adversity. The performance reenacts the grand scenes of the People's Liberation Army liberating Chongqing and joining the local people in defending the city. The highlights of the performance are as follows:

  • Immersive experience: "Chongqing · 1949" employs bold, innovative artistic techniques and advanced, complex technologies to simultaneously present different narrative scenes from multiple dimensions. This allows the audience to undergo a powerful immersive experience, providing a comprehensive and multi-faceted sensory impact.

  • Subverting Traditional Theatre Stage DesignThe performance brings the iconic Ciqikou Wharf to the stage, meticulously recreating the 1940s wharf with over 70 steps and stilted buildings standing 18 meters high on either side. The highest point of the core stage reaches 15 meters, which subverts the traditional concept of theatre stages.

  • Outstanding Scenic Design and Lighting Effects:The rotating and interwoven stage space, combined with the grandeur of the scenic design, along with naked-eye 3D dynamic panoramic sound and visuals, and intelligent lighting, transports the audience back to the "mountain city" before dawn, allowing them to experience a history filled with both tragedy and deep respect.
