As local travel experts, we often see travelers make common logistical mistakes that cost them time and money. To help you plan the perfect trip, we’ve compiled the top 4 logistical tips you need to know before you go.

1. The "So Close Yet So Far" Trap: Xingping & Xianggong Mountain

Looking at a map, Xingping Ancient Town and Xianggong Mountain seem to be right next to each other. However, they are separated by the Li River, and there is no bridge directly connecting the scenic spots.

  • The Rookie Mistake: Trying to take a taxi or drive from Xingping Town directly to Xianggong Mountain. This requires a massive detour that takes 40 to 50 minutes one way!

  • The Insider Tip: The smart way to cross is by taking the local ferry. It’s cheap, authentic, and saves you a huge amount of time.

2. Bamboo Rafting: Yulong River vs. Li River

Rafting is the highlight of any Yangshuo trip, but not all rafts are created equal. You have two main options:

  • Yulong River (Highly Recommended): These rafts are manually poled by a boatman. No motors, no noise—just the sound of water and nature. It is a peaceful, "slow travel" experience. The "playability" here is much stronger, often involving small dams that the raft slides over for a bit of excitement.

  • Xingping / Li River: The rafts here are generally made of PVC pipe (imitating bamboo) and are powered by electric motors. While the mountains are grander, the noise of the motor can detract from the tranquility.

Our Verdict: For the most authentic experience, choose the Yulong River.

⚠️ Important: Yulong River tickets are extremely popular and often sell out early in the morning. Since international apps don't always work here, if you are struggling to book tickets on your own, [Click Here for Ticket Booking Assistance], and we’ll secure your spot for you.

3. Strategic Accommodation: Where Should You Sleep?

Yangshuo is larger than many people realize. Xingping Ancient Town is about a 40-minute drive from the town center (West Street) and the Ten-Mile Gallery area.

Here is how to choose your base:

  • Stay in Xingping Ancient Town if: You plan to hike Xianggong Mountain for the sunrise early the next morning. Being close by means you can sleep a little later before the hike.

  • Stay along the Yulong River if: You want a boutique hotel experience with stunning views, easier access to restaurants, West Street nightlife, and the major daytime activities. For 90% of travelers, the Yulong River area is the most convenient and scenic place to stay.
