When is the Best Time to Visit Lijiang?

Lijiang enjoys a mild, subtropical climate, making it a fantastic year-round destination. However, to experience the city at its absolute best, timing is everything.

  • Spring (March to May): The ultimate sweet spot. Temperatures hover comfortably between 9°C and 26°C. Expect clear skies, blooming flora, and excellent visibility of the snow-capped peaks.

  • Autumn (September to November): Following the summer rains, autumn brings crisp highland air, deep blue skies, and breathtaking golden foliage.

  • Summer & Winter: Summer (June-August) is lush and green but brings daily rain showers and peak domestic crowds. Winter (December-February) is chilly but rewards you with stark, stunning snow views and peaceful, empty streets.

🚌 How to Get to And Get Around Lijiang

Getting to Lijiang

  • By Air: Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG) is about 28 km from the city.

    • Airport Shuttle: 20 RMB/person. Takes ~60 mins to the Old Town South Gate area.

    • Taxi: ~100 RMB.

    • (Note: Ninglang Luguhu Airport serves Lugu Lake, 60 km away via shuttle or taxi).

  • By Train: Lijiang Railway Station is the main terminal. Bullet trains from Kunming take ~3.5 hours.

    • To Old Town: ~7 km away. Accessible via buses (No. 4, 16, 18) or Didi/Taxi (~30 RMB).

  • By Bus: Lijiang Bus Station (closer to Old Town) and Lijiang Express Bus Station connect to Dali, Lugu Lake, and Deqin.

Getting Around Lijiang

  • City & Ancient Towns: Reach Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe, Baisha, and Black Dragon Pool Park easily via Didi or local buses.

    • Lijiang Old Town: No city walls, 6km perimeter. Multiple entrances—know your specific drop-off point, especially if you booked a guesthouse.

    • Distances: Baisha is 11km from Lijiang Old Town and 5km from Shuhe. Shuhe is 8km from Lijiang Old Town.

  • Surrounding Sights (Snow Mountain, Lashi Lake, Tiger Leaping Gorge): Due to distance and lack of reliable Didi/bus service, chartering a car or joining a day tour is highly recommended.

🛏️ Where Should You Stay:3 Main Areas

  • Lijiang Old Town (Dayan): Best for first-timers who want to be in the center of the action. Warning: Cars are not allowed inside. Book a hotel near the North or South gates so you don't have to drag your suitcase over miles of cobblestones!

  • Shuhe Ancient Town: The family-friendly choice. It is much quieter than Dayan, with a great selection of premium boutique hotels.

  • Baisha Ancient Town: Best for views. Many guesthouses here offer unobstructed, jaw-dropping views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain right from your window.

Accommodation Tips

  • Transportation: Lijiang is not very large overall, and the three major ancient towns are quite close to each other (about 5 km from Dayan to Shuhe, and 2-3 km from Shuhe to Baisha). It is convenient to reach the scenic spots no matter where you choose to stay. However, the ancient towns are pedestrian-only zones where cars cannot enter, so please confirm whether the hotel provides luggage transfer services before booking.

  • Peak Season Booking: It is highly recommended to book panoramic view rooms and snow mountain view rooms at least 2 weeks in advance. Prices can fluctuate significantly, especially during the peak season.

  • Noise Concerns: If you prefer a quiet environment, try to avoid staying in the central area of Dayan Old Town; Shuhe and Baisha are much more tranquil. If you are a light sleeper, consider choosing hotels on the outskirts of the ancient towns.

  • Budget Reference: During the off-season, budget hotels near Dayan Old Town are approximately 70-80 RMB/night, mid-range guesthouses are 200-500 RMB/night, and high-end resort hotels are 1000+ RMB/night. Prices will increase during the peak season.

  • Other Options: Areas like Yuhu Village and Dongba Valley offer beautiful scenery but lack fully developed amenities. They are best suited for self-driving tourists looking for an in-depth, off-the-beaten-path experience.

🍲 What to Eat

Where to Eat:

  • Zhongyi Market: The local canteen. Authentic, cheap (15-50 RMB/person), and bustling.

  • Lijiang Old Town: Historic snacks, but avoid tourist-trap "wanghong" (internet famous) spots.

  • Baisha & Shuhe: Great for relaxed, scenic dining (Baisha for mountain views, Shuhe for upscale bistros).

Must-Try Dishes:

  • Jidou Liangfen (Chickpea Jelly): Pan-fried or served cold.

  • Cured Pork Ribs Hot Pot (La Paigu): A traditional, savory Naxi staple.

  • Wild Mushroom Hot Pot: A Yunnan classic (ensure they are fully cooked!).

  • Naxi Roast Meat, Old Grandma's Potatoes (Mashed Potatoes), & Wrapped Tofu (Baojiang Tofu).

Snacks: Freshly baked Flower Pastry (Xianhua Bing), Roasted Rice Cakes (Erkuai), and Lijiang Baba.

⚠️ Essential Survival Tips

  • Weather is Everything: The beauty of Blue Moon Valley and the Snow Mountain relies heavily on sunlight. Always check the weather forecast before booking your mountain tickets!

  • Beat Altitude Sickness: Lijiang sits at roughly 2,400m (7,800ft). On your first day, do not wash your hair (a local trick to prevent catching a cold which exacerbates altitude sickness), walk slowly, and avoid alcohol. Do not climb the snow mountain on day one.

  • Navigating the Mountain: If you take the scenic bus to Blue Moon Valley, skip the first stop and get off at the second stop ("Shuiyue Pavilion" / 水月阁) to save yourself a grueling 5-kilometer walk!
