Tiananmen Square Visitor Guide: Entry Gates, Security Rules & Reservations

Navigating Tiananmen Square requires understanding strict security checkpoints and reservation systems. Below is the exact logistical information international tourists need for seamless entry.

Entry Gate Navigation

Select your security checkpoint based on your itinerary.

Gates 1 & 2: Best for Forbidden City & Tiananmen Rostrum

  • Location: Subway Line 1 (Tiananmen East / Tiananmen West stations).

  • Route: Direct access to Tiananmen Rostrum photos and the Golden Water Bridge leading to the Meridian Gate (Forbidden City entrance).

  • Efficiency Tip: Gate 1 (West side) processes crowds significantly faster. Avoid Gate 2.

Gate 3: National Museum Express Route

  • Location: Subway Line 1 (Tiananmen East Station, Exit C).

  • Route: Dedicated entry for National Museum visitors. Bypasses the main square tourist queues.

  • Requirement: Must have a valid National Museum reservation.

Gates 4 & 7: South Landmarks & Qianmen

  • Location: Southern end of the square.

  • Route: Direct access to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Great Hall of the People, and Qianmen Street.

  • Efficiency Tip: Gate 4 has virtually no queue in the afternoon. Highly recommended for families with children or elderly members.

Reservation Policy Matrix

All reservations must be processed through the "Tiananmen Square" WeChat Mini-Program.

  • General Square Entry: Requires a standard "Tiananmen Square" reservation.

  • The Exemption Rule: Visitors holding valid reservations for the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, National Museum, or Great Hall of the People do NOT need a separate Square reservation.

    • (Note: A Forbidden City ticket alone does not grant Square access; you must enter the Forbidden City via the East/West Flowery Gates instead).

  • Flag Raising/Lowering Ceremonies: Requires a specific "Flag Raising" or "Flag Lowering" booking. Rule: You must enter exactly through the security gate selected during booking. Incorrect gate entry requires re-queuing.

  • Flag Ceremony Timing: Arrive at least 1 hour early. Prime spots are claimed by visitors queuing as early as 3:00 AM.

Security Checkpoint Inventory

Tiananmen Square enforces strict, manual security checks.

Prohibited Items (Confiscated or Denied Entry)

  • Flammables: Lighters, matches, alcohol sprays, fireworks.

  • Blades/Sharp Objects: Scissors, fruit knives, eyebrow razors, peelers.

  • Printed Media: Banners, flyers, slogans, paper business cards.

  • Restricted Apparel: Cosplay, elaborate Hanfu, or clothing featuring large slogans or unusual graphics.

  • Electronics: Drones, tripods, strong flashlights, power banks exceeding 20,000mAh.

  • Miscellaneous: Sleeping pills, duct tape, playing cards.

Permitted Items

  • Identification: Passports or Chinese IDs (Must exactly match the reservation data. Required for children).

  • Liquids: Transparent, empty water bottles (direct drinking fountains available). Opened beverages require a sip test by security.

  • Electronics: Power banks under 20,000mAh (must not be damaged/bulging), selfie sticks.

  • Bags: Allowed, but subjected to thorough manual search.

Speed Hacks for Fast Security Clearance

  1. Use the No-Bag Lane: Traveling without a bag allows access to the express lane, requiring only a quick physical pat-down.

  2. Digitize Documents: Do not bring paper notebooks, diaries, or printed itineraries. Security manually inspects paper goods page-by-page. Store all info on your phone.

  3. Remove Opaque Phone Cases: Security requires inspection behind non-transparent phone cases. Use a clear case or remove it prior to the checkpoint.

  4. Avoid Umbrellas: Security must manually open and inspect every umbrella. Only bring one if it is actively raining.

  5. Luggage Storage: Store oversized bags and prohibited items before queuing. Lockers are available around the square perimeter (approx. 15 RMB/day) or at the Beijing Grand Hotel baggage deposit.
